Steve is admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Tasmania and the High Court of Australia. He completed his university studies at the University of Tasmania in 1979 and has worked in private practice in Tasmania since his admission to the bar.
After initially practising in criminal law, he developed a practice in insurance law and has practiced almost exclusively in that area since the mid 1980s.
He joined Dobson Mitchell & Allport in 1983. He became a director of the firm in 1987. He is now the senior litigation director, overseeing an insurance litigation department which handles all aspects of insurance law.
Steve was asked to establish a branch of the Australian Insurance Law Association in Tasmania, and this branch began in 1995, at which time he was also appointed to the national board of AILA. He was appointed Vice President of the board in 2001 and then elected by the membership to the national presidency in 2005. During his time as a board member of AILA, he has served as the chairman of the Tasmanian branch for a number of years, and also chaired the organizing committees for two national conferences, in 1999 and 2005.
Steve was also appointed by the Law Council of Australia to be part of its committee dealing with the proposed reform of The Insurance Contracts Act 1984.
