Val graduated from the University of Tasmania in commerce in 1958 and in law in 1961.

Since 1961, Val has practised in all areas of commercial law, including mergers, acquisitions, trade practices and business structuring. He has also practised in most areas of taxation law and in 1993 chaired a comprehensive review of state taxes and charges for the Tasmanian Government.

In 1997 Val retired as senior partner of the firm to become a consultant, and is available to the firm for strategic business advice.

He served for over five years as a member of the Legal Committee of the Companies and Securities Advisory Committee (CASAC) and has held numerous directorships of both public and private companies.

He is a former chairman of the Cascade Brewery Company Limited, Perpetual Trustees Tasmania Limited, Huon Forests Products Joint Venture and is currently chairman of Cuthbertson Holdings Pty Ltd (Blundstone Group), UTAS Innovation Ltd, Brewster Ltd, Roadways Pty Ltd (Group) and a director of Tasmanian Perpetual Trustees Limited.
